If you’re just starting to think about senior photos, you’re not behind.

But here’s the part most people don’t realize… by the time it crosses your mind, the best dates are already starting to fill.

I see it every year. Summer comes around, schedules get busy, and suddenly we’re trying to squeeze sessions into whatever nights are left instead of choosing the ones that actually fit what you want.

And that’s where timing really starts to matter.

Most of my senior sessions happen in the evenings, and that beautiful golden light everyone loves? It doesn’t stick around the same way all year.

In June, the sun just kind of hangs out. It gives us time. We’re not racing to catch the last bit of light. We can move between spots, switch outfits, and let things unfold naturally instead of rushing through it. That slower pace makes a difference. You can feel it in the session, and you can see it in the images. Once school starts, though, everything shifts.

The sun starts setting earlier, which means that window of good light gets shorter. What used to feel relaxed suddenly feels rushed. There’s less time for outfit changes, fewer locations, and not much wiggle room if something doesn’t go as planned.

And then life piles on top of it. Sports, practices, jobs, activities… evenings disappear fast. Trying to find a night that works for everyone, has decent weather, and lines up with that small golden hour window gets harder than people expect. Those dates go quick. One of the biggest things people don’t think about is flexibility.

In June, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, we can pivot. We can reschedule without stress. We can take our time and make sure everything comes together the way it should. Later in the season, that gets a lot tougher. There just aren’t as many open dates to fall back on, and everything starts to feel a little more rushed. And when things feel rushed, you end up settling. Fewer outfits. Fewer locations. Less of the story you were hoping to tell.

Because that’s really what this is about. Not just checking senior photos off the list, but creating something that actually feels like them. The things they love, the way they spend their time, the little details that won’t look the same a year from now.

Right now, June sessions are still open, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite times to shoot. The light is beautiful, the evenings are longer, and everything just feels a little more relaxed. If you’re hoping for a session where you’re not watching the clock, where you can have a few different looks, maybe hit more than one location, and not stress if the weather shifts… June is where that happens.
